Counties Power appeals to public after serious electricity incidents

A series of serious safety incidents involving members of the public over the last few months has Counties Power appealing to the community to remain vigilant around power lines.

In one instance, a crane connected with high voltage power lines while moving material onto a building site, with the operator sustaining a massive electric shock. Yesterday a digger made contact with live lines causing significant damage, while on Tuesday a commercial hedge trimmer connected with lines causing a significant fire. This follows on from other serious hedge trimming incidents this year.

Counties Power General Manager Operations Dale Carline says all cases could have been tragic.

“These incidents could have caused death to the operators or members of the public. Simply talk to us first and we will recommend the safest way to work around electricity and if you need a Close Approach Permit.”

“This is a timely reminder as we head into the warmer months for home owners doing DIY on their properties – please always look up for lines. I urge the public to be mindful around electricity. Watch your use of ladders and long trimmers and if trees are within four metres of power lines you must use an approved contractor. You can call us for a safety disconnect which is usually free.”
