Counties Energy’s First Foundation Scholarship Student Sophia Chen Graduates and Joins Fisher & Paykel Healthcare
Pokeno resident and former Pukekohe High School student Sophia Chen has successfully graduated and is now employed as a Product Development Engineer at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare.
Ms. Chen was awarded a First Foundation scholarship through Counties Energy, which has supported her academic journey and development. The three-year scholarship programme empowers talented young people by providing financial assistance, mentorship and work opportunities, helping those who may not have the financial means to pursue tertiary education.
Through the programme, Sophia received financial support for her university tuition, mentorship from industry professionals and valuable part-time work experience at Counties Energy during her study breaks. She completed a biomedical engineering and science (psychology and computer science) conjoint degree from the University of Auckland.
Counties Energy’s General Manager of Safety, Culture and Sustainability, Tracey Kay, says that supporting Sophia has been a rewarding experience for the organisation.
“Providing this scholarship to Sophia was an honour. It not only gave her financial and professional support but also fostered an environment where she could grow personally and academically. Sophia’s energy, dedication and enthusiasm were invaluable over her time with us and she has made a lasting impression on our team. We’re confident that she will excel in everything she pursues, and we wish her every success at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare.”
Reflecting on the experience, Sophia expressed gratitude for the opportunities provided by Counties Energy.
“It’s been an incredible journey, and I am truly thankful for the support I received from Counties Energy. From mentoring to work opportunities, the team welcomed me with open arms and enriched my learning experience. The lessons I’ve learned will stay with me for life.”
The scholarship, named the Bob Arvidson Memorial Scholarship, honours one of the first trustees of the Counties Power Consumer Trust, now known as the Counties Energy Trust.
Counties Energy continues its partnership with First Foundation with current scholarship recipient, Isabella Coughlan, another former Pukekohe High School student, who is two years into her journey with the programme.
