Counties Energy Extends Energy Hardship Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme

Counties Energy is proud to announce the extension locally of the Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme, in partnership with EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority), to provide free energy-efficient heat pumps to 56 homes across the region. This initiative aims to support households experiencing energy hardship by improving their access to affordable, reliable and sustainable heating solutions.

Counties Energy has been part of the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme since 2020, offering free insulation to low-income, owner-occupied homes. Around 150 homes in Pukekohe, Waiuku, Tuakau, Port Waikato, Drury, and southern Papakura have been insulated through this initiative.

Homeowners can check their eligibility for grants using the tool on EECA’s website, at www.warmerkiwihomes.govt.nz.

The expansion of the programme reinforces Counties Energy’s commitment to improving the well-being of its communities by addressing energy efficiency and affordability challenges. As part of the initiative, eligible households will receive heat pumps, which offer an efficient and cost-effective heating option, helping families stay warm and comfortable throughout the year.

Counties Energy General Manager Commercial Andrew Toop expressed pride in the programme’s success and the ongoing collaboration with EECA.

“Our partnership with EECA through the Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme enables us to make a meaningful difference for families in need. By providing access to efficient heating, we are not only reducing energy costs for households but also promoting healthier living environments.”

“The Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme targets low-income homeowners, offering funding support for heating appliances and insulation to create warmer, drier and healthier homes. The extension of this programme by Counties Energy will continue to provide valuable assistance to families facing energy hardship, ensuring they have access to efficient and sustainable heating solutions.”

“As a 100% consumer-owned company, we’re committed to delivering reliable energy solutions while working on innovative projects and partnerships that enhance the well-being of our communities. Reducing energy hardship within our community is a focus and we’re working on initiatives that provide real, targeted support to those who need it most. These include partnerships with experienced agencies to deliver the most beneficial impact through education and energy-saving devices,” Mr Toop says.

Counties Energy also supports Franklin Family Support Services, a local social services agency. Since 2022 the company has partnered on the funding and development of Winter Warmer Packs for local whānau in need. This collaboration ensures that essential items, such as energy-saving eco bulbs, energy-efficient slow cookers, fresh vegetables donated by local grower Wilcox and soup mixes from The Warehouse Pukekohe, are provided to families to help keep warm and reduce their power bills over winter.

Another energy hardship programme the company supports is award-winning EnergyMate. This initiative provides free in-home coaching and resources for whānau at risk of energy hardship.

Counties Energy believes that these comprehensive energy hardship initiatives will help create lasting positive change, building a community where everyone thrives.
