We’re currently focused on Karaka Harbourside as our data shows that there is a higher incidence of EVs and solar PV systems in the area which supports our deployment for a smart technology trial. If successful, we aim is to roll out such initiatives further to other areas in our network.
Counties Energy is trialling a smart energy program in the Karaka Harbourside neighbourhood. This trial is part of our ongoing work as your local electricity distributor to explore smarter ways to optimise energy usage and support sustainable energy use in homes. We’re giving locals the chance to trial smart energy management devices, which are a form of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), in their homes, with subsidies available through EECA (Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority), our partner in this trial.
The trial area is shown in the map below. If your property is within the area shown and you would like to register your interest, please fill in the form below.
Karaka Harbourside locals tell us what the smart energy trial means for them as early adopters. There’s excitement for the neighbourhood around the chance to be part of a more sustainable energy future.
The next step?
As there are a limited number of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) available for this trial, please be aware that we may not be able to enrol all interested households, even if they meet the trial criteria.
Once we receive your application form, our team will assess the information you’ve provided to check your home’s suitability for solar panels, batteries, Home Energy Management System (HEMs), or devices to manage your heat pumps or hot water cylinders. If your home passes the initial assessment, we’ll then organise a home visit by a specialist vendor to carry out a site assessment before discussing next steps.
What will this trial cost me?
With the subsidy available from EECA for trial participants, households will be paying for 50% of the costs of the devices and for installation.
Why is this trial only in Karaka Harbourside?
Can I get financing for these smart energy devices?
As part of the trial, there is an associated cost for the smart energy devices and their installation, with 50% of total costs to be paid by the customer. While we are unable to offer financial advice, we suggest that you contact your bank to see if they offer either green loans or mortgage top ups with low interest rates to help with upfront costs.
How long will this trial last?
The trial will last for five years. During this time, Counties Energy will optimise the energy for trial participants who will be able to track their usage and modify their energy behaviour based on these insights.
How do I know if I’m eligible for this smart energy trial?
To participate, you’ll need to be in an area where the Smart Energy Trial is running. After you submit your expression of interest, our team will arrange a quick virtual assessment to gather details like your roof type and other location-specific information.
Will participating in this smart energy trial affect my energy bill?
This depends on a household’s energy consumption and behaviour after smart energy devices are installed. For some households, insights into their consumption patterns may prompt less consumption, or consumption at a different time of day, which could result in cost savings. In other households, generating energy via solar PV and storing this in a battery system may prompt additional usage, which may increase the cost of power.
What types of technologies are involved in the smart energy trial?
The devices included in the trial can range from solar panels and batteries to Home Energy Management Systems (HEMs), as well as devices to control your heat pumps or hot water cylinders. The specific devices offered will depend on the suitability for your home or business.
Do I need to make any changes to my home or business to participate in a smart energy trial?
No changes are required on your part before you register your interest in the trial. If accepted into the trial, you may be required to change the type of power plan you are on to optimise your energy usage after smart energy devices are installed.
How can I track the progress of my energy usage during the trial?
Some smart devices come with their own apps which will allow you to monitor device performance and track your energy usage.
Can I participate in the smart energy trial if I already have devices such as an EV charger or solar panels?
Absolutely! If your devices are “smart” devices (i.e. Wi-Fi enabled), we can enroll your devices as part of the smart energy trial after a site assessment has been carried out. You may also register your interest for additional smart devices that you don’t currently have.
The ways in which we use, produce, and share energy are changing. In short, we are reimagining how energy is viewed as a resource.
