Counties Energy delivers $13.5m Annual Discount to its community

Counties Energy is proud to announce that from today, more than 50,000 customers can view how much they’ll receive from the company’s $13.5 million annual discount. The discount will appear as a credit on eligible customers’ November, December or January power bills, issued by their energy retailer.

To qualify for the 2025 discount, customers must have been connected to the Counties Energy network on 7 November 2025. The discount is calculated based on network charges paid between 1 November 2024 and 31 October 2025.

This year’s announcement reflects Counties Energy’s ongoing commitment to its communities and its focus on building a resilient, future-ready energy network. In 2025 alone, the company has invested $50 million into strengthening and expanding its infrastructure across one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing regions.

Counties Energy Chief Executive Judy Nicholl says the company is dedicated to delivering safe, reliable power while preparing for what lies ahead.

“As a 100% consumer-owned company, we’re proud to deliver another record discount to our customers while continuing to invest heavily in our network and community. This year, we reached a significant milestone of 50,000 power connections, and we’re investing in customer-centric systems and services to ensure our customers remain at the heart of everything we do.”

“We’re building new infrastructure to meet growing capacity demands and maintaining our network to ensure safety and reliability. Our region’s rapid growth means we must continue to invest in future-proofing our energy systems to support increasing demand.”

“We also recognise that it’s been a challenging year for many, with the rising cost of living and ongoing inflation impacting households across our region. That’s why we’re working hard to deliver a cost-effective, reliable network that supports our community’s needs today, while continuing to invest in the infrastructure and innovation that will power tomorrow.”

Counties Energy is also proud to be at the forefront of the energy transition for Aotearoa New Zealand, with support from the Electricity Authority and EECA for its innovative projects. The Franklin Energy Sharing initiative enables renewable energy to be shared with local charities Mai Lighthouse and Whaanau Resources Trust O Pukekohe, while the soon-to-be-launched Karaka Harbourside Smart Energy Pilot will create a smart, energy-efficient community that showcases the future of residential energy use.

The company has also completed a major infrastructure programme this year, with a combined investment of $40 million across two significant projects. The Eastern Network Renewal Programme has improved reliability and resilience across the eastern region, while the Barber Road Substation Project has increased capacity to support ongoing growth and meet rising demand across the network.

Counties Energy continues to support its communities to thrive through a wide range of emergency services, energy wellness, education, sporting and sustainability initiatives. This

year, the company launched the Counties Energy Innovation Fund in partnership with Innovation Franklin, supporting STEM and energy-focused projects in local secondary schools. It also introduced Counties Energy Nature’s Classroom with The Y Camp Adair, an immersive environmental education programme designed to inspire young people.

The company is owned by the Counties Energy Trust, which holds shares on behalf of electricity consumers in the network region.

Counties Energy Trust Chairperson Christine Rupp commended the team for their dedication and achievements.

“We’re incredibly proud of the discount Counties Energy has delivered to their customers this year, while also balancing the need for substantial investment in the network and increased costs across the industry. These efforts reflect the company’s commitment to innovation, reliability and customer service, while also supporting our community.”

The award-winning Counties Energy Christmas Lights Trains at Night will run from 5 to 23 December at the iconic Glenbrook Vintage Railway.
